Tiles in Wood Optics – A Special Trend

A great advantage of tiles is that every kind of decor can be realized with it. Currently we have a special design trend for friends of beautiful wood grain: tiles in wood look almost like real wood, but bring all the advantages of ceramic surfaces. They are easy to clean and serve as perfect heat conductors for underfloor heating. The homely character of the wood decor also creates a cozy atmosphere.

These characteristics characterize the wood decors

They look like wood, but have very different qualities: high-quality tiles in wood look are characterized by a great resistance; they can not be scratched easily and can also be wiped. The surface grain often has a slightly plastic structure, which benefits the natural appearance and also feels more “woody”. Some types of tiles can also be laid out in the outdoor area, for example, a clean terrace floor, which withstands any weather and still looks like wood.

Tiles can be connected particularly well to a floor heating system because they have excellent heat-conducting properties. Wood, on the other hand, has a rather dampening effect, so tiles in wood optics for barefoot and sock runners offer an ideal alternative. In addition, no swelling joints are created in tiles, whether by water or temperature fluctuations. The lifetime is also considered to be particularly high for high-quality products. Who likes the combination of warm look and cool surface, will surely come at his expense.

Tiles in wood optics: design ideas for your home

Tiles in wood optics offer many different design possibilities, we have looked for you!

  • Use modular formats: wood tiles in modular formats allow a variety of possible combinations, since products of different sizes and shapes can be seamlessly joined together with such systems. For example, you can optically separate different room units visually from each other and still maintain a uniform style.
  • Floorboard for the hallway: Your entrance area should look warm and comfortable, but wooden floors are just too sensitive? Lay tiles in wood optics with a hard-wearing surface, which does not make any solid footwear, wet or road dirt.
  • Large-format tiles: Tiles in wood optics are also available in large formats with more than one meter of edge length. This allows large rooms to be finished quickly, as well as large-area patterns that enlarge the room. In small rooms are combined with light walls and a white ceiling to recommend. >> Our tip: Tile a long, hose-like space transversely in order to widen it visually and to shorten it. Small tile formats are more suitable for large rooms, mosaics have their own anti-slip effect.
  • Wood tiles for the wall: tiles in a chic wood look are also suitable for the wall, they replace the traditional wooden panels. This allows you to visualize even wet areas visually, where walls covered with real wood would only present difficulties. The elegant bathroom in the warm wood ambient is therefore nothing more in the way with this tile type.
  • Recyling products: Of course there are tiles in this decor style also as recycled material. These products, however, do not look at their past lives, they have a new effect and are still used to protect the environment.
  • Tiles in the herringbone pattern: The popular herringbone pattern is well known from the parquet area, this motif is now also available in tile form. Especially because this decorative laying form is so closely linked to the material wood, these tiles look particularly natural in wood optics.
  • Gray tiles in wood optics: gray shades are trendy in the living area, also wood look tiles cover this area stylishly. Marked wood grains in various gray shades are particularly modern and offer a wide range of combinations.

When buying tiles, pay attention to resistance

If you buy tiles for the private living area, you can rely on robust surfaces that do not wear so easily. Scratching chair legs, sturdy shoes and road dirt should not affect the floor in relevant areas, so it is important to pay attention to the abrasion class and scratch hardness of the tiles when purchasing. Only really high-quality tiles in wood optics actually fulfill the requirement to be more resistant than genuine wood.

A look at the wear classes of tiles

The abrasion class of a tile says a lot about its resistance. In Austria and Germany, tile surfaces are assigned to classes I to V, with abrasion class V having the highest durability. Such soils are used primarily in the commercial sector, where there is daily high traffic and dirty street shoes are the order of the day. In private rooms, this abrasion class is usually not necessary, but certainly does not hurt.

Also tiles of wear class IV can be walked on with street shoes and can withstand scratching soiling, so are perfect for the entrance area or the living room. Smiles in wood optics, which are classified as abrasive class III , should be treated more carefully, but can also be used in the entire living area. The abrasion class II , on the other hand, is only recommended for minor used spaces, since scratching contaminations are very damaging. The abrasion class I is only soft soles and has therefore almost disappeared from the offerings of the specialist markets.

Also consider the scratch hardness according to MOHS

The hardness on the Mohs scale, divided into a scale from 1 to 10 , are explicitly information on the resistance of a glazed tile surface to scratches of all kinds. Suitable for domestic use are primarily those wood look-tiles having a hardness of MOHS 6 to 9 , wherein 8 and 9 are also applicable to commercial premises. Since the bathroom is rarely entered with dirty street shoes, tiles of the scratch hardness of MOHS 3 to 5 are sufficient here. Stage 5 corresponds to an already stronger bathing standard and stage 3 is more suitable for little used baths.

Our tip: A tile can never be too resistant to the intended living area, only too little. This is why the highest possible abrasion class and scratch hardness are always to be applied, so the tiles also stay healthy when a hard, heavy object collides with them. Overall, this is also a price question.

Avoid slipping

Especially for floor areas, which regularly come into contact with water, it is worth buying the best anti-slip tiles. This is mainly for terrace and bathroom, but also for hallway and kitchen. Many owners also equip their stairs with anti-slip tiles, because this is an area with increased risk of accidents. The corresponding classification scale provides information on the anti-slip effect of surfaces, interesting for the private sector are mainly R9 to R11:

  • R9: easy anti-slip effect, recommended for bathroom, kitchen and hallway
  • R10: medium anti-slip effect, recommended for bath and terrace
  • R11: high anti-slip effect, recommended for wet areas in the bath

What do tiles cost in wood optics?

The prices of the tiles in wood optics naturally depend strongly on the quality. In the construction market, there are always tiles with abrasion class 4 and anti-slip class R10, which cost only about 15 euros per square meter. Check very carefully if the look appeals to you! Square meter prices of 30 euros and more are also possible, often resulting in a natural-looking decor.
